The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Waste Management System developed at Vigyan Ashram, Pabal, is an innovative and sustainable solution designed to convert biodegradable waste into protein-rich larvae and organic fertilizer. The system uses BSF larvae (Hermetia illucens), which efficiently consume and decompose kitchen waste, food scraps, and farm residue. The larvae, once grown, are harvested as high-protein feed for poultry and aquaculture, while the remaining frass (insect excreta and residue) serves as an excellent organic fertilizer.

Current Status

 

The system is currently operational and tested on the Vigyan Ashram campus. It is part of their experiential learning program, where students, interns, and visiting farmers receive hands-on training. The Ashram has also conducted outreach programs, pilot deployments in nearby villages, and demonstrations during science and agriculture exhibitions. Multiple interns have contributed to documenting and improving the process. The project has been recognized as a decentralized and replicable model of biowaste management, promoting the circular economy in rural areas. With potential for further innovation, such as integrating IoT (e.g., using ESP32 for remote monitoring), the BSF project remains a promising example of grassroots technology solving real-world environmental problems.
